ComiCentric Issue 45: Winnie the Pooh Sangre Y Miel : with Candy Briones & Valeria Ontiveros
As far as nostalgia goes we are always burdened with the issue of should it go on. How else is it going to become nostalgic if we don’t let it sit on the shelf unperturbed for decades. waiting for the day when our brains get a little hint of old dopamine that once permutated our skulls. We go looking for that what we shelved and life on the memory of the dopamine released at that time. Its just our way to make ourselves feel good.
Now lets say you shelf this nostalgic memory and someone comes along and they make a continuation … a sequel …. Or universe forbid… a reboot. You will quickly try to defend that what you deem rightfully yours. Your memories are precious and you don’t want them soiled by any means.
what happens when your childhood becomes public domain and thrusted into a horror movie? Well at this is a neat crossroads, we get Horror Pooh : Blood & Honey. Who is left in charge of something that can now be interpreted in any which way? No one and that’s what makes Horror Pooh : Blood & Honey such a trip of a movie. You mix the enduring qualities of a slasher flick with the childhood nostalgia of characters that you grew up with and you get a mix so delicious you just want to put it in a honey pot.
I propose to you what happens when you domesticate that what shouldn’t be. You build trust with what you think are your friends. Live love and laugh for them was a way of life. Never doubting each other and their trust. But let’s say that one day you just decide to leave and these friends you have been nursing and nurturing. They are left alone to fend for themselves. In WtP: Blood and honey the creatures of ‘100 acre wood’ learned to fend for themselves.
Learning how to be alone I the world with out a guide you trusted for many years can be terrifying and a daunting task. So much so that you are bound to eat… umm.. Make some mistakes along the way. Thus, twisting one’s psyche. Learning to fend for yourself after years and getting a taste for meat in the middle of the forest only gives you limited options when it comes to survival.
Forward time a while and you return to find those friends that you cared for have turned, and worse yet they have turned the love they had for you into full on hatred and blood lust. The tropes of a horror movie and the usage of beloved characters makes this a unique amalgam of a movie. The weirdness and charm of this movie are only a biproduct of that what can become when we leave our childhood unattended.
