Catching up with your pal and mine Peter Mellini with past and upcoming musings
No ghost this week kids. So, Pete and I take a moment to talk about what’s been going on around our comic world. We went to go watch Thor: Love and Thunder on the day it was released so we take a long minuet discussing the ups and downs of the movie. While it was an excellent movie and in the end the hero prevails, we find ourselves in a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. The movie takes several dark tones like death, the loss of faith, and how the upper-class society don’t give a shit about you. It masks it in a way that you can still laugh about it and have a good time watching a Superhero movie.
We discuss the director Taika Waititi’s roll in making this the best Thor movie’s, of a Norse god who pretty much lost everything, can be. The New Zealand director has several hits on his belt. But is it because he’s an eccentric or is it because he understands the eccentricities of man? Hard to say, but he can make you feel things so that’s a trait many directors fail to show in their work.
And of course, we talk shop… as in comics. We discuss the Thor book that tie in tot the movie. Also, he tells us a story about Jack “King” Kirby, when he stepped out of the marvel bullpen in New York to fight some Nazis that didn’t take kind to his anti-Nazi propaganda. And a great musing about a book he would write if he got a chance to work at marvel, that not only included one Steve Ditkos greatest creations Speed ball but also had the newcomer known as Gold Balls. In an epic that could have been called balls to the wall he pitches us an epic story of unlikely friendship that just makes sense.
And to close out the show we talk about how it is almost the 10-year anniversary of owning Nostalgic comic shop. And past events we have had and future events that are coming. This includes a Signing instore to celebrate the fact that one of the shops friends has made it. Mark “El Dude” Martinez writer and artist of such comics as samuriachi has had the chance to draw a cover for IDW studios up in coming Godzilla vs Battra book. He will be in store on the day the book releases Aug 3, 2022.
Besides that, he looks forward to celebrating the 10-year anniversary of owning the store. We discuss what could be possibilities. And we also discus the future of the up in coming EastLA CAPE. Will it happen? Also do you like the way the sound plays now? No more quiet sounding guests. Tune in and find out and let me know.
